Picture this- you have recently graduated from your undergraduate degree, and all your friends have a clean plan in mind. Some are going abroad to pursue further studies, some have offers from big and small companies alike, a couple of them are starting their own venture in the professional world, but you have none of them despite being on the hunt for a job for months. Well, this happens to the best of us, but don’t let it discourage you.

Job hunting can be a very tedious and draining process, both physically but more so mentally. One moment you are on top of the world after making past three rounds of interviews, and the other moment you are disappointed to hear that they “proceeded with another candidate”. In order to combat this emotional rollercoaster of a journey, you need to keep your spirits high and your mindset strong during your job search adventure.

Embrace the Journey, Not Just the Destination

First things first – let’s reframe how we think about job searching. Instead of seeing it as a necessary evil, try viewing it as an exciting journey of self-discovery. Each application, each interview, each rejection (yep, those too!) is teaching you something valuable about yourself and the working world. Pro tip- Keep a “Job Search Journal” where you jot down what you’re learning along the way. You’ll be amazed at how much you grow!

Celebrate the Small Wins

In the job search game, it’s easy to focus only on the end goal – getting hired. But there are so many small victories along the way! Did you customize a killer cover letter? High five! Made it to the second round of interviews? You rock! Recognizing these mini-milestones will keep your motivation tank full. You can create a “Win Jar”. Every time you achieve something in your job search, write it on a slip of paper and pop it in the jar. On tough days, pull out a few slips to remind yourself of how awesome you are!

Build Your Skills, Build Your Confidence

Use this time to level up your skills. Learning new things not only makes you more employable but also boosts your confidence. Plus, it gives you something positive to focus on between job applications. Check out free online courses on platforms like Coursera or edX. Maybe learn that programming language you’ve been curious about, or brush up on your public speaking skills!

Surround Yourself with Positivity

Your environment plays a huge role in your mindset. Surround yourself with positive people who support and encourage you. Join job search support groups, connect with motivated classmates, or find a mentor who can offer guidance. Even when things seem tough, there’s always something to be grateful for. Maybe it’s the support of your family, the skills you’ve gained in school, or simply the opportunity to pursue your dreams. Focusing on the positives can significantly shift your mindset.

Learn from Rejections, Don’t Dwell on Them

Rejections are not failures – they’re redirections! If you don’t get a job you applied for, try to get feedback. Use it as a learning opportunity to improve for the next application. And most importantly, remember…

Your Worth Isn’t Defined by Your Job Status

Last but definitely not least, always remember that you are so much more than your job search or career status. Your worth comes from who you are as a person – your kindness, your passions, your uniqueness. Don’t let temporary job search struggles shake your self-worth!
