How can you help Türkiye and Syria?

On 6th February 2023, a catastrophic earthquake of 7.8 magnitude shook struck through Türkiye (Turkey)- Syria border, killing thousands and leaving even more injured and homeless. As of now, more than 35,000 people have died due to this and over 75,000 are injured. The extent of this disaster is still unknown, but rescue efforts for survivors continue in both countries in a desperate attempt to save lives.

With many people left displaced, Türkiye and Syria need our help. So, what can you do to help these nations affected by the earthquake?
To begin with, when we hear of aid, we automatically jump on to donate certain amounts of money to help those in need. It is important to ensure that you send in your donations through trusted and legitimate websites, so you know that your money is going to the intended recipient. While monetary donations are most sought-after to help rebuild the country and the hopes that come with it, we understand that it may not be possible for everyone (especially not students alone) to contribute monetarily or at least a lot of it. In this case, it is important to remember that every penny counts! Donations that start off small amount to those of thousands that can be used for the greater good.

For donating money, avoid unreliable crowdfunding sources and instead donate through your local donation set-up for the cause. You may also wish to check out UN Crisis Relief Donations, UNICEF Earthquakes Emergency 2023, and other trusted charity organizations that are working together to help Türkiye and Syria. In UAE, you can contact the trusted Emirates Red Crescent for further monetary donations to this cause via bank transfer, credit card or even via a text message.

Apart from monetary donations, you can donate other material goods like water, canned foods, clothes, blankets, and other basic necessities to your nearest donation drive. UAE has opened public donation drive for the earthquake survivors organized by Türkiye’s consulate in Dubai and you can deliver essential supplies including food, warm clothing, and bedding to the collection point in Al Quoz.

And lastly, now more than ever, Türkiye and Syria need our prayers. Let’s pray for the families that are left incomplete and those that still haven’t had the chance to mourn the loss of their loved ones. Remember them and pray that their hope never dies as it is the one main drive which will help them rebuild from their losses.
